Calling moose in the rut

What is moose calling? How do you call a moose? Can you call moose horns? When is calling Moose rut?

Calling and Tracking Moose During the Rut -. In this video, I track moose and call in a couple of bulls during the September rut in Ontario, Canada.

Learn the simple technique to call a bull moose in during hunting season while the rutt is on. Click on the link to get a calling horn. As an Amazon Associat. There are only two main moose sounds to learn: the cow call and the bull call.

Mix in a series of cow calls with intermittent bull grunts. As they move across the hills and through the forests, bulls utter croaks several times per minute, varying their volume. I have hunted in early September and been able to call bull moose in using and estrous cow moose calls in an area that I know the peak rut is October. There will always be some cow moose that will start ovulating early and of course a bull moose that hears the yearning calls of a cow moose in estrous will investigate, and may even vocalize his.

Moose hunting later in the season can requires you to go deeper into the forest away from the lakes and opening.

Moose will tend to go into the swamps in bad weather and later in the season for protection and better food sources. At Kawdy Outfitters, moose hunts begin in late August and big bulls are harvested before, during and after the rut. Many hunters even prefer targeting moose outside of the rut because they are more predictable and tend to stay in the same areas.

However, hunting through the rut is truly exciting and the action can really heat up when calling tactics are implemented. The bull will usually rake his antlers on some bushes and make a commotion to let you know that he is the dominate moose in the area. Rutting behaviors typically begin in late August or early September and continue until early to mid-October. Knowing what happens during the rut can offer an advantage to hunters out in the field during the season. This type of calling works best during the pre-rut period and during the early stages of the rut when bulls are searching for cows.

Start by finding an opening or clearing that a bull has recently visited. Make downwind calls so that the wind carries the sound as far as possible. One study component was behavioral ecology—the interrelationships between behavior and ecological factors that moose experience. Moose have a series of rutting events which are similar to those seen in other deer species, however they have several characteristic behaviors which give them a distinct rut.

The first of these behaviors is a challenger gait where the bull moose will sway back and forth and circle the rival bull while dipping his antlers down. Male moose begin growing antlers after their first year but are very unlikely to find a mate at this young age. Cow moose tend to prefer more mature bulls, and a bull moose ’s prime age for mating is between five and years.

During the rut , it is not uncommon to see clashing antlers and bold stand-offs as bull moose compete for mates. Males (bulls) ingest enough nutrients to grow a new set of antlers and by late August have gained up to 2pounds of fat and muscle. Mid October is the time that the moose get a bit rambunctious during their rut , or mating season.

The cows call out to the bulls with large bellows in the hope that they will come courting. The leaves have dropped so the views can be awesome. We have a variety of spots in the woods that the moose frequent for you to visit by foot, canoe, or vehicle. Excitement aside, however, calling is also the most effective way to hunt bulls during the rut , particularly in relatively flat terrain that precludes the opportunity for effective spot-and-stalk hunting. Even during the heat of the rut , an old bull will take a nap on a hot afternoon.

A cow- in -heat call or an antler rattle can draw out a bull. Antler scraping sounds on trees and shrubs can be used in early September. The snort wheeze is usually the last warning call made before things really escalate, which is where the rattle comes in.

Bucks lightly spar throughout the early season, trying to find their place in the social hierarchy without risking a serious injury. The rut lasts until early October. Once the rut approaches, however, there is very little sparring left. Cooler weather and they do move more but as less light hits the retina the moose get closer to the rut. There stages to the rut that I hunt by.

First is the pre rut beginning around the 10th -12th. I have called bulls in and had them come to the call but still cautiously.
