Raveling pavement

A raveled pavement should be investigated to determine the root cause of failure. Repair strategies generally fall into one of two categories: Small, localized areas of raveling.

Remove the raveled pavement and patch. This is evident by the rocks and sand on the pavement surface and in gutters. Over a period of time, the thickness of the pavement begins to dwindle away, until the entire pavement has eroded completely. Ravelling occurs as individual aggregate particles dislodge from the pavement surface downward. It usually starts with the loss of fine aggregate (fines) and advances to the loss of larger aggregate sizes.


Raveling starts subtlely but slowly makes its way through your asphalt, leaving you with an ugly pockmarked and gray asphalt driveway that is much more susceptible to damage than well-maintained asphalt. Raveling tends to occur in older, unmaintained asphalt driveways that are already showing signs of oxidation. As the cracks continue to expand over time, small particles of aggregate break apart and eventually compromise the foundation of the pavement. There are different methods to evaluate pavement distresses and raveling. If the pavement is still structurally soun the raveling can be fixed with a fog seal or slurry seal.
