Volunteer lawyer asylum

Through Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation program, volunteer lawyers have the unique opportunity to change the lives of refugees by helping them win asylum in the United States. Our clients have fled from political, religious, ethnic, and gender-based persecution in countries plagued by human rights violations. They were there to help asylum-seekers navigate the constantly-changing and. A recent grant from the American Bar Endowment will enable the ABA Commission on Immigration to lead monthly, weeklong volunteer trips to each of its two legal services projects on the southern border.


Volunteer work needed: Volunteer lawyers to represent asylum-seekers and immigrants seeking to remain in the United States through various forms of immigration relief and cases of unaccompanied children who are held in federal detention facilities in South Texas. Gonzalez previously worked as a Senior Staff Attorney in VLP’s Positive Families and Individuals project providing representation to clients impacted by HIV and as the staff attorney for Community and Economic Development working with not for profits and small businesses in WNY. She has worked in New York City as a trial attorney in the housing unit of both the Legal.

Emma Buckthal received her JD summa cum laude from the University at Buffalo Law School, and her BA magna cum laude from Alfred University. Since then, she has focused her legal work on immigrants before USCIS, EOIR, and ICE. Before joining VLP full time, she volunteered at VLP for three years as a student intern, and spent summers at Kalikova. As a staff attorney in VLP’s Positive Families and Individuals program, she serves individuals and families impacted by HIV in a variety of legal matters.


Wynn’s cases have included child custody and visitation cases, child support proceedings, unemployment matters, debtor-creditor issues, housing matters, divorce proceedings, and end of life pla. Degree from SUNY Buffalo Law School and her Licenciatura en Derecho(the equivalent of a law degree) from the Facultad Libre de Derecho de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico. Cisneros Vilchis received her LL. Paula brings years of experience in all aspects of financial operations. Her skills ensure the accounting department operates at the highest level of compliance and integrity and works efficiently and effectively.

Cheryl first started as a Paralegal in our Immigration Program and is now the Office Manager bringing years of legal experience to our Batavia, NY office. Blanca holds a law degree from the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada (“UMNG”), in Bogota, Colombia as well as a Master of Laws degree from SUNY at Buffalo Law School. The legal components of Asylum Access services are supported by our Legal Advocates, a group of volunteer lawyers, law students, or people with refugee legal experience who provide direct legal advice, protection advice, referrals and representation to refugees who are navigating highly prejudiced environments. Through the NQRP program, VLP provides legal representation for detained individuals who are unrepresented by counsel and have been found to be incompetent to represent themselves in their immigration proceedings because of a serious mental disorder. HIAS has launched an emergency response program to ensure that asylum seekers have access to legal representation.
