How to make a fabric lampshade from scratch

What materials are used to make a lamp shade? How do you make a lamp shade cover? How to make lamp shade covers?

Using the paper templates you made in Steps and as guides, make two circles from the wire coat hangers for the top and bottom frames of your lampshade. Use one piece of hanger wire for each frame.

Twist the hanger wire into a circle and secure the ends by twisting them together with pliers. Clip off any excess wire with a wire cutter. The side you want on the outside of your lampshade should be facing down because you’ll be making. Roll your frame across the fabric to work out how much you’d need to cover it completely. Mark out the shape it forms.

Apply your fabric to your styrene. Peel back a small section of the styrene sheet.

Lay the fabric face down. Cut the fabric you have chosen for the lampshade. Cut into strips according to the measurements taken, and add an extra half inch to its width.

Now fold the material over the ring until it touches the bottom side of the ring or until it’s on the styrene just below the ring. Use the clips to hold the ring in place as you go. Add glue to the excess fabric around the top of the shade in small sections. Use a small paintbrush to spread the glue to cover the fabric as well as the metal of the ring. The glue will become tacky after a few seconds and then you can fold it over the ring.

To gauge the number of strips neede subtract inches from the height of the shade, divide by 1. When calculating the length of. Chalk where it fits the fabric allowing 2cm at the top and bottom to secure it and then cut out. Add an extra layer of glue to the upper and lower rim to secure. By simply using fabric and glue, you can quickly transform a lackluster lampshade into a pretty home accent—all in less than one hour.

The trick is to take some time picking out your fabric. Follow steps 8–from Coil Seat Finale to make bias tape out of the fabric of your choice.

This will be the trim for the lampshade , so you’ll need enough to cover the seam and go around the top and bottom edges of the lampshade. In this video I try to find a cheaper way to make a lampshade for the copper pipe lamp we built. Place the plastic lining on top of the fabric. Then stick the fabric tightly over the paper and the inside of the rings of the cylinder.

Use your scissors to cut the appropriate length of the fabric. Make sure to give yourself about an inch of extra fabric to work with on the top and bottom of the lining. Remove the old fabric from your frame.

If your frame bends while. Start with the two right sides of your fabric together. Wrap the spokes with seam tape. Insert your needle through the two layers of fabric. Insert the needle on the back side of your fabric sandwich on the same imaginary line as the first stitch.

The thread will be looping over the edge of the fabrics. Using a foam brush spread a layer of Mod Podge onto the base, carefully lay your paper on top an with moistened fingers or a brayer, gently push out any bubbles that may appear. Set aside and allow to dry thoroughly.
