When the moose rut begins and likely for a few weeks before the beginning of the cow moose estrous the bulls will move down out of the higher elevations to seek out the cows. The bulls will stay in the lower and wetter areas within proximity of the cows with hope of getting the breeding done. Where do rut moose hunt? I hunt the first week of Oct every year and north of Athabasca where we go the rut has always been on. Rather than scouring kilometres and kilometres of countryside, it’s just easier to bring in a big bull with love-struck calls. Compared with the overall length of the hunting season, however, this prime-time window of opportunity is relatively small. Our first rut hunt takes advantage of the “anticipation” phase of the breeding cycle and our second rut hunt takes advantage of the “desperation” phase of the breeding cycle.

Our rut moose hunt can also be combined with our fall black bear hunts. After the rut is over the bulls are more social, often seen in bachelor groups. November post- rut moose hunts are for rifle hunters only.

Most of our hunts take place in the prime of the rut in late September, early October. Success on rut hunts is primarily found by calling bulls and spot and stalk methods. Hunters are accommodated in tent camps. This type of calling works best during the pre- rut period and during the early stages of the rut when bulls are searching for cows.
Start by finding an opening or clearing that a bull has recently visited. The rut hunts take place north and west of Edson and are normally run from a tent camp. In the years of running this hunt we have had seasons with more than moose tagged on this hunt.
