Americano vs espresso

Is espresso different than coffee? As nouns the difference between espresso and americano is that espresso is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing hot water under high pressure through finely ground coffee while americano is a drink made of espresso diluted with hot water. In the other worl Americano cannot be made without espresso machine. Not so exciting when said like that, but the truth is that it is very comparable to drip coffee, except maybe better. And there are variations on the ingredients and preparation that can change the drink quite a bit.
